What is SYPHILIS?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection that, if left untreated, can lead to major health consequences. There are several phases of syphilis (primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary). Each stage is marked by its own set of indications and symptoms

Transmission

Direct contact with a syphilis sore during vaginal, anal, or oral sex can cause syphilis. Sores can appear on or around the penis, vagina, or anus, as well as in the rectum, lips, or mouth. Syphilis can be passed down from a mother to her unborn child.

Prevention

The only way to avoid contracting STDs is to refrain from engaging in vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse.

If you are sexually active, you can reduce your risk of contracting syphilis by doing the following:

Being in a long-term, mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested for syphilis and is syphilis-free; and using latex condoms correctly every time you have sex. Condoms protect against syphilis transmission by preventing contact with a sore. Sores can develop in regions that aren't covered by a condom. Syphilis can still be transmitted by contact with these lesions.

Symptoms in Men Include

Syphilis symptoms often include painless sores/ulcers on or around the genitals, rectum, or mouth that can also look like small warts. A syphilis sore usually occurs in the first stage of the disease and can eventually heal. Unfortunately, syphilis has a “final stage” that can occur years later and cause major health problems.

  • Stage 1: Syphilis sore
  • Stage 2: Body rash
  • Stage 3: Affects internal organs
