Cold Sore

Cold sore / Oral herpes (Herpes Labialis) is caused by HSV-1 and can result in cold sores or fever blisters on or around the mouth. Most people with oral herpes were infected during childhood or young adulthood from non-sexual contact with saliva. Oral herpes can spread from the mouth to the genitals through oral sex. There is no cure for oral herpes. Prompt initiation of antiviral therapy can shorten outbreaks.

Common Signs and Symptoms
  • Red, fluid-filled blisters around the lips and occasionally on the nose or cheeks
  • Fluid secretion from blisters
  • Formation of scabs after blisters have dried
  • Itching and irritation of affected areas
  • Swollen lymph nodes
